Title: Typical and atypical antipsychotics drug-induced agranulocytosis and neutropenia: a case report
Author: Saber A. Mohamed, Yousef A. Shawosh and Abdullah M. Al Marzoogi
Abstract:
Agranulocytosis is an idiosyncratic reaction that usually occurs in the first 3–4 weeks of treatment with psychotropic drugs, particularly with clozapine. All psychotropic drugs have been associated with blood dyscriasis [1&2]. White blood cells (WBCs) are affected most commonly resulting in neutropenia (neutrophils < 1500 ml) or agranulocytosis (neutrophils < 500 ml). The drug-induced dyscriasis might be caused by direct toxic effect on bone marrow, peripheral destruction, or antibody formation against hematopoietic cells or its precursors. Keywords: agranulocytosis, neutropenia, typical and atypical antipsychotics
